The NCC unit 5(TN) Air Squadron (Tech) Unit, Salem is started in this institution in the Year 2006 with a sanctioned intake of 50 cadets for (Senior Division/Senior Wing)

National Service Scheme (NSS)

Coverage

The National Service Scheme of Mahendra Engineering College (Autonomous) Unit I started in 1998 with a strength of 100 volunteers and Unit II started in 2000 with a strength of 100 Volunteers. The NSS Cell of Mahendra Engineering College had worked particularly, for leadership development in student Volunteers, both male and female. At present the NSS Cell, Mahendra Engineering College has a strength of 208 Volunteers working under Programme Officers Mr.T.Arul Kumar and Mrs.Dr.R.Brindha.

Objective

To Understand the community in which they work
To Understand themselves in relation to their community
To Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process
To Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
To Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems
To Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
To Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.

Motto

The motto or watchword of the NSS is “Not Me But You”. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society on the whole. This expresses the essence of democratic living and upholds the need of selfless service and appreciation of the other man’s point of view and also consideration for fellow human beings.

Symbol & Badge

The NSS symbol is embossed on the NSS badge. The NSS volunteers wear it while undertaking any program or community service. The konark wheel in the symbol has eight bars, which represent the 24 hours of the day. Hence, the badge reminds the wearer to be in readiness for the service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hours. The Red Colour in the badge indicates that the NSS volunteers are full of blood i.e. lively, active energetic and full of high spirit.The Navy Blue Colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

NSS Day:

NSS was formally launched on 24th September 1969, the birth Centenary year of our Father of Nation. Therefore, 24th September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programs and activities.

Programmes Of Action:

There are two kinds of programmes i.e., the Regular Programme, which is organized throughout the year and another is the Special Camp Programme, which is organized at the adopted village for seven days. These programmes are planned and executed in the light of guidelines framed by the Central and State Governments, with the view to develop the personality of the student and to develop the community at large.

Youth Red Cross (YRC)

Coverage

Mahendra Engineering College has a YRC unit, functioning in an effective manner.There are more than 100 volunteers in engineering stream, one Programme Officer is appointed for the unit. The Principal, Programme Officer, interested staff members and the student representatives form a committee. At present the YRC Cell, Mahendra Engineering College has strength 100 students volunteers working under head of the Mr.V.DHANASEKAR.

Promotion of national and international friendship, to develop the mental and moral capacities of the youth.

The Youth Red Cross aims to inspire, encourage and initiate at all times, all forms of humanitarian activities so that human suffering can be minimized, alleviated and even prevented, thus contribute to creating a more congenial climate for peace.
